It is actually a Japanese tradition, as far as I know. I got into origami back when I taught Geometry. It was a lot of fun to teach with, but, years later I found out about the thousand Cranes when I was very sick. I took on the challenge as a form of meditation and to make a wish: to get well enough to have, and see, my own child.
